Canada gaining perspective on airport investments from global markets: expert

As Canada looks to private capital for investments in public assets like airports, the country is in an advantageous position since it can learn from other markets, says one expert.

“It isn’t one size fits all, but it does require the government to think very carefully about the appropriate regulatory environment, almost industry by industry,” says Roger Pim, managing director of strategy and capital formation at Ireland-based infrastructure and energy investor NTR.

Following the inaugural Canada Investment Summit, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the government would pursue private investments in the country’s four largest airports. According to Carney, these deals would see the federal government retain ownership of the land and assets, while the investing partners would help enhance the airport experience for travellers.
