Macon’s Huckleberries Have Returned

Why did violent crime increase in the black community after all the civil rights legislation of the mid-60s, after it became illegal to discriminate based on skin color?

Back in March, after a weekend of “shoot-em-ups” that left five dead and nine others wounded, I wrote that Macon, GA has lots of huckleberries. “Huckleberry” was 19th-century slang for “I’m the guy you’re looking for” or “I’m ready for you.” After several months of hiding in the sewers and “shot houses,” sadly, in the last two weeks, Macon’s huckleberries and hood rats have returned with a vengeance; gunning each other down, sending some to the morgue and dozens to the hospitals.

Last Wednesday (Sept. 23), Macon had a shooting that left five men wounded. All five, ages 18-24, are expected to recover. Just when you thought Macon’s violence couldn’t get any worse, the huckleberries doubled down, literally. On Sunday (Sept 27), there was a shooting at Carolyn Crayton Park that left 12 people injured (10 teen boys, two teen girls). After such shootings, the injured are transported to hospitals which are promptly placed on “lockdown” because hood thuggies often go hunting their injured prey -- meaning Macon PD thought that rival gang members might show up seeking revenge.

Last week’s shootings bring to nine shootings in Macon over the last two weeks that have left two dead and 25 others wounded. On September 19, LaKendrick Jamari Banks, a 15-year-old high school freshman, was found dead on Grosso Ave. The next day, Jeremiah Quantez McCrary, 21, was found dead inside a vehicle at 2300 Pio Nono Avenue. In addition to last week’s city park and Unionville shootings, other shootings occurred in Bloomfield, Fort Hill (east Macon), and the Baconsfield neighborhoods. Shooting victims are mostly young black men in the gangbanger age range, 12/13 to 27/28, though several were young black women.

As a whole, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office does good work apprehending the perps. That’s because thuggies are not very........
