20mph update prompts anger over 'absolute waste of money'

WalesOnline readers have been expressing strong views following the most recent developments regarding 20mph roads. Numerous commenters argued that the changes have squandered public funds and worsened driving conditions.

In September 2023, the Welsh Government cut the default speed limit on restricted roads from 30mph to 20mph, triggering one of the biggest public backlashes in recent years. Hundreds of thousands of people signed a petition calling for the policy to be scrapped.

A year on, in September 2024, ministers shifted their position, announcing that councils would be allowed to restore 30mph limits on certain roads — provided they met a set of national criteria. Local authorities across Wales were invited to consult residents on which roads should be considered for change.

That process remains ongoing in many parts of the country, while in others, decisions have already been made. Some councils have opted not to reverse any 20mph limits, while others have confirmed changes that are being rolled out this year

One reader, DanRhondda comments: "What an absolute waste of money that was. If anything, I’m hearing of more accidents now than before. Probably because it creates so much rage on the road, people have been taking unnecessary risks."

Jezza-89 agrees: "Couldn’t agree more. People overtaking along roads with cars parallel park, road rage as you say, driver having to constantly take their eyes off the road to look at the speedo."

Hufeniapoeth writes: "What a chaotic and pointless exercise this has been. It’s hardly surprising that the ruling party is languishing in the polls."

Pastcaring adds: "What a monumental farce. The politicians involved should be personally made to pay, with Drakeford at the top of the list."

Lhowells says: "An appalling waste of money. And 469,000 signatures were against this in Wales. They ignored the populus. Hang their heads in shame and make THEM pay for it ALL."

Rosemay writes: "Those councils that have refused to revert roads to 30mph need to feel the consequences next time we vote."

Seaphin says: "All roads where speed restrictions are should revert back, all roads narrowed for unused cycle tracks widened again."

AndyMOD1967 asks: "How much did this fiasco cost us again? Oh, that's right, 30 million, wonder how many bin collections that amounts to, or GP consultations, or hospital beds? Labour, the party that keeps on wasting."

NeathResident - All the roads that were 30mph are STILL 30mph to the vast majority so what a pointless article and what a waste of money by the councils when they could be spending it on more important things.

Swearymark believes: "All roads in Wales need to be reverted back to 30mph. 20mph is an unwanted policy, and we were ignored."

As the saga of the 20mph speed limit continues, are you happy with the ones that will be reverted to 30mph? Comment below or HERE to join in the conversation.
