I was born on a naval base in California. Once my family left Port Hueneme, we still visited frequently to see family in the San Francisco Bay area.

My take on California? I'm a thumbs-up: great climate, stunningly beautiful natural environment, lively culture, great food (and wine).

But I never had to pay phenomenally high rent there, or buy gas or navigate its infamous traffic for any longer than a few days. I also........
