Keir Starmer resigned as Prime Minister on Monday, stepping down after just two years in office. Standing outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer announced his decision following mounting pressure from Labour MPs and cabinet ministers in the wake of devastating local and Welsh election defeats.

"I have heard the answer," he said, referring to his party's question about whether he remained "best placed to lead us into the next general election".

Starmer committed to remaining in post until Labour's governing body selects a successor before Parliament returns in September.
