Climate Change Distress

The contemporary issue of climate change is an existential threat to the global population. The transcontinental impact of climate change and rising temperatures encompasses a significant level of threat. The gravity of the impact is manifest both in the Global North and Global South despite discursive boundaries. The increasing levels of temperature, torrential rain, and indirect effects of man-made causes have engulfed humanity with unprecedented loss. Climate change is posing a significant security threat owing to its direct and indirect impacts. The latest Country Climate and Development Report by the World Bank predicted that by 2050, Pakistan may incur a loss of between 6.5% and 9% of its GDP. The economic cost of environmental degradation would significantly impact, directly or indirectly, the quality of life.

One of the important aspects that requires emphasis is the understanding of the “epistemological gap”, which presupposes the dominant mode of thinking on the basis of discourse. The epistemological gap leads to, if left unattended, the legitimacy of knowledge production that highlights the discrepancies in the sharing of the burden regarding global warming. Episodic coverage in decontextualised form would hinder the holistic understanding of the issue. Journalists in Pakistan need to cover environmental-related issues through the lens of scientific understanding so that national and international audiences would be able to gauge the unparalleled impact of climate change on different societies.
