Homan on Democrats opposing ICE at voting sites: ‘What are they afraid of?’

White House border czar Tom Homan on Tuesday did not rule out the presence of immigration enforcement at polling places, asking what Democrats are “afraid of.”

Homan’s comments, made during an appearance on “The Charlie Kirk Show,” are the latest in the back and forth as the Trump administration gives inconsistent answers over whether they would dispatch U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to polling sites.

Democrats have been clear they see any such move as an intimidation tactic while questioning why armed agents would be needed near polling places.

“Are illegal aliens voting? I mean, bottom line is, what are they afraid of? And they say illegal aliens don’t vote. Well, look, you know, part of DHS’ job is secure elections, and I’m not going to say, you know, you know, what our plan is going forward, but if only U.S. citizens can vote, I don’t see the issue of what they’re concerned about,” Homan said, referencing the Department of Homeland Security.

Reviews have found just a handful of instances where noncitizens have attempted to vote in U.S. elections, countering GOP claims of widespread fraud.

DHS officials have given conflicting answers over whether ICE officers might be stationed at polling places.

In a recent call with secretaries of state, a DHS official called plans of placing agents at polling sites “misinformation.”

In other congressional appearances, DHS officials have said there are no plans to do so at the time.

But Homan’s remarks come as ICE officers have been dispatched to airports amid the multi-week DHS shutdown, prompting questions about other ways the agency’s officers might be used.

Former Trump aide Steve Bannon on Tuesday called the presence of immigration officers at airports a “test run” for bringing ICE into other scopes of work.

“We can use this as a test run, as a test case to really perfect ICE’s involvement in the 2026 midterm elections,” he said on his “War Room” podcast.

Some Democrats said they do see ICE at airports as a stepping stone in a broader plan.

“These are all tools of how the president is trying to think about a much larger plan, which is, if you cannot hold onto power through democratic elections, then adjust democratic elections,” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said during an appearance on CNN.

Newly sworn in Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said during his confirmation hearing that ICE would not be used for voter intimidation.

“The only reason why my officers would be there is if there was a specific threat for them to be there, not for intimidation,” he said earlier this month.

“There will be a reason for us to be there, and it’ll be known why we’re there.”
