Trump asks NY court to toss remnants of ‘legally unsound’ fraud case
President Trump has asked New York’s highest court to erase what’s left of the civil fraud judgment against his business empire that put the state’s attorney general, Letitia James, in his crosshairs.
In a 119-page filing Wednesday, Trump’s lawyers told New York’s Court of Appeals that James’s sprawling civil fraud case marked an “unprecedented” use of the attorney general’s power.
“This Court should put an end to this politically motivated action,” his lawyers wrote.
James sued Trump and his family business in 2022, alleging he inflated his net worth for tax and insurance benefits. The wide-ranging case threatened to mar the president’s real estate mogul image, do away with his billionaire status and imperil the future of the business that built his fame, while turning James into one of Trump’s most prominent adversaries.
A lower court ruled mostly in Trump’s favor. It threw out the roughly $500 million penalty James won against Trump and his business at the trial level, but kept other penalties intact, along with the trial........
