Watch live: Trump speaks at White House unexpectedly
President Trump delivered unscheduled remarks to reporters on Monday morning, shortly after his blockade on the Strait of Hormuz came into effect.
President Trump announced Monday afternoon 34 ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz today, “which is by far the highest number since this foolish closure began.”
The blockade began at 10 a.m. after 21 hours of peace talks over the weekend in Pakistan ended without a breakthrough.
As the blockade appeared to take effect, Trump warned that Iran’s small attack boats would be “ELIMINATED” if they came near U.S. Navy ships.
Iran appeared unwilling to back down from Trump’s threats, with the country’s acting defense minister saying Monday that Tehran is prepared for “any scenario” and threatening to strike back at U.S. warships.
