“Snow White” actress Rachel Zegler can’t seem to keep herself from whining.
“When I was younger, my approach to beauty was a lot more shaped by what I was witnessing in big pieces of media. So, it was who was on magazine covers, who was in the beauty commercials, who was in movies, and who’s considered, like, the most beautiful movie star at the time. It was definitely very eurocentric as I was growing up,” Zegler said in a video for Harper’s Bazaar UK published Thursday. (RELATED: ‘Snow White’ Might Be Disney’s Biggest Flop Yet)
“And being a young Latina, that was hard because not a lot of people looked the way that I did. They didn’t have bushy eyebrows like I did. They didn’t have dark eyes like I did.”
If Zegler were an 80-year-old, her complaint might have some basis in reality. But Zegler was born in 2001. There have been plenty of Latinas in “big pieces of media” in the past thirty years: Sofía Vergara, Zoe Saldaña, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba, Eva Longoria, Victoria Justice, Selena Gomez, Morena Baccarin, Salma Hayek, Michelle Rodriguez, Selena Quintanilla, Rosie Perez and Shakira.
Vogue Australia claimed that Latina models “rule[d] the Victoria’s Secret runway” in 2018: Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Gisele Bündchen, Joan Smalls. These women were practically the picture of beauty in the 2000s. Ambrosio and Bündchen look pretty white, but then again, many Latinos do. Zegler herself is half white.

Zegler launders narcissism through the language of social justice. It’s not enough that women who look like her get cast in beauty commercials and movies and appear on magazine covers. Zegler wants a woman who looks like her to be considered “the most beautiful movie star” of the period.
That being said, Lopez featured on the cover of People Magazine in 2011, next to the cover line: “World’s Most Beautiful Woman!” Not that anyone would confuse Lopez for Zegler. (RELATED: ‘Snow White’ Star Rachel Zegler Gets Brutal Tongue-Lashing From Her Producer’s Own Son)
Zegler continued: “So, as I’ve grown up, I’ve really been able to find it within myself, which is really nice. And I’m sure the dawn of the internet is both a helpful and hurtful thing for that because I was able to find other people like me, but then I was also opened up to a whole nother world of comparison. But I have a frontal lobe now and that’s been really helpful.”
