You gotta hand it to the Europeans. When it comes to sports, namely soccer, they are rabidly passionate. So much so that when their historically good national team sucks, there’s political backlash in parliament.
The Italian National Soccer team was once the crown jewel of international soccer. They have won four World Cup titles, most recently in 2006, and two European Championships, the last just six years ago in 2020. However, for the past three World Cups, they have failed to qualify. On Tuesday, in a major upset, they lost to little ol’ Bosnia and Herzegovina, and dreams of reclaiming glory (or just a modicum of pride) were embarrassingly dashed. This is such a crisis in Italy that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party requested an official briefing on what has happened to the team during Wednesday’s parliament session.
“It’s obvious that Italian football needs to be relaunched and that this process must begin with a change in leadership at FIGC [the national football federation],” Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi reportedly said. He is also asking for heads to roll and for current Italian soccer head, Gabriele Gravina, to resign.
Meanwhile, the scenes in Bosnia were electric Tuesday.

American sports fans are, of course, passionate, loyal and will do crazy things when their favorite teams lose in embarrassing fashion. But could you imagine President Trump calling for what is virtually an investigation into the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team if they crashed out of the World Cup this summer?
Never in a million years would that happen. But Italian soccer fans are out for blood. They want footballing justice, and they deserve it.
