Could Perth be about to show Dundee how co-operation between the local football club and city council and planners can work to the benefit of the entire community?

While Dundee FC sweats on whether their proposed Camperdown stadium will ever see a spade in the ground, St Johnstone’s ambitious owner Adam Webb is contemplating bold new plans, and the possibility of a potential partnership with Perth and Kinross Council.

This would be a big shot in the arm for both sport and the community in general in the Fair City.

The city of Dundee missed a trick years ago when city rivals Dundee and United agreed to share a 30,000-seater stadium at Caird Park, as part of Scotland’s bid to host Euro 2008.

Uefa eventually awarded the finals to Austria and Switzerland in December 2002, and despite both city rivals refusing to publicly dismiss a ground-sharing proposal, the lack of public funding, which would have been available if the Euros had come to Scotland, meant the idea was dead in the water.

With real vision, a new stadium at Caird Park could have been the catalyst for a complete city sports village with new ice rink, swimming and leisure facilities adding to the golf course and velodrome already........
