A 5-year-old died Monday after entering Shasta Lake without a life jacket, officials said.
The child entered the water at Turntable Bay without a life jacket and went underwater before the parents could rescue them, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. Rescuers arrived in the area near Turntable Bay just before 11:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a child missing in the water.

Crews from the sheriff’s office, Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and California Highway Patrol Air Operations searched for the child. The dive team found them around 12:30 p.m. The child was pronounced dead, and no foul play is suspected, the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities are urging the public to take precautions in the water, noting that a “routine outing can become tragic.” Recently, the Shasta Lake area has experienced warmer-than-normal temperatures, the sheriff’s office said, but the water is still “extremely cold for the foreseeable future.” Visitors are also urged to ensure their boating equipment and safety gear are prepared.
“The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, on behalf of all public safety agencies involved in this incident, offers sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the juvenile and to all those affected,” the sheriff’s office said in its Facebook post.
