Gilberts: U.S. Civil War had spin-off benefits for Chatham-Kent

I have finally started to go through our local history files and begin to reorganize them.

While filing, we found two It Happened in Kent scripts, and one was about the effects of the American Civil War on Chatham-Kent.

It Happened in Kent was a series of radio sketches, put together by Pete McGarvey when he worked at CFCO. McGarvey worked as news director at CFCO from 1965 to 1975 and began writing historical vignettes, which he later perfected when he syndicated a program called Heritage Ontario, which aired throughout the province for five years in the 1980s.

The program we want to talk about was aired on CFCO on Dec. 13, 1970 and it talks about how the Civil War in the United States affected business and society in Chatham. McGarvey sets the scene in 1864 and tells us the Union Army placed many orders for grain and vegetables from the farms of Kent........
