Gilberts: New director, summer students busy working at Black Mecca Museum

Josh Shreve is the (relatively) new director/curator at the Black Mecca Museum.

A few days ago I had the pleasure of meeting up with Josh Shreve, who is the (relatively) new director/curator at the Black Mecca Museum, at the WISH Centre on King Street in Chatham. I wanted to find out more about Josh and about his work at the museum. If you haven’t been there, maybe you’ll be inspired by this column to go and do so this summer.

The Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society and Black Mecca Museum has been around since 1994 and found a home two years later when the WISH Centre was built. Since that time the dedicated group of seven women who were most responsible for its establishment have continued to work hard to promote and preserve the amazing stories that make up Black history in Chatham-Kent. They have also had a full-time curator for some years as well, and Josh Shreve fills that role today.

Josh grew up in south Chatham, but his roots in the Shreve and Shadd family go very deep in the Buxton area as well. He has roots in the Robinson and Robbins family as well. And today, he........
