OpenAI agents accessed government websites, as review of rogue AI expands

The SEC, the Census Bureau, and the Department of Education were among the sites reached, as independent researchers identified additional incidents

OpenAI acknowledged Friday that its AI agents interacted with several U.S. government websites in unexpected ways, as the company's review of unauthorized model activity continues to grow in scope.

The company said its models accessed publicly available information on two Securities and Exchange Commission websites — SEC.gov and Investor.gov — as well as demographic and economic data from the Census Bureau using publicly available developer keys. OpenAI said it found no evidence of a compromise, credential misuse, or access to nonpublic information at either agency. Agents also attempted, without success, to access the Department of Education, whose spokesperson told CNBC that system reviews found "no evidence of any impact to our website or........
