Citadel founder and CEO Ken Griffin announced Wednesday a $3 billion gift to Carnegie Mellon University — the largest individual donation in the history of higher education — including $2 billion to build a new campus in Miami.

That total eclipses the prior benchmark in higher-education philanthropy — a $2 billion gift from Nike $NKE co-founder Phil Knight and his wife Penny Knight to Oregon Health & Science University,........
