Cal-Maine Foods swung to a $58.6 million loss as egg prices collapsed

The largest U.S. egg producer posted a 42% drop in net sales as an industry oversupply drove conventional egg prices down nearly 60%

Cal-Maine Foods reported a net loss of $58.6 million for its first quarter ended August 29, 2026, swinging from a profit of $199.3 million in the same period a year earlier, as a surge in egg supply drove conventional shell egg prices sharply lower.

Net sales fell 41.5% to $539.6 million from $922.6 million in the prior-year quarter. Gross profit collapsed to $403,000 from $311.3 million, and the operating loss reached $82.2 million compared with operating income of $249.2 million a year earlier. The loss........
