Communication Methods in Ancient Rome

Ancient Romans communicated in synchronous and asynchronous channels. Synchronous channels involved face-to-face interaction. Asynchronous communication involved writing on parchment, papyrus, or stone. The document was then delivered to an individual.

Because most people could not read, a trusted third party was needed to verify the authenticity of critical asynchronous communications. History’s first recognized notary was Marcus Tullius Tiro (74-4BC), a Roman slave freed by Cicero.

Notaries were critical to preventing fraud and maintaining citizen confidence. This structured approach to validating asynchronous communication helped the Roman Empire expand international trade.
