Safe Spaces: Fathers Always Matter to Their LGBTQ+ Children

A recent report by Just Like Us, a UK-based LGBTQ young people's charity, reveals that LGBTQ young adults were twice as likely (14%) as non-LGBTQ young adults (6%) to say that they were not close to their immediate family members. For trans and non-binary young adults, this figure was even higher: 19% and 23%, respectively. A third of LGBT young adults were hesitant to come out because they feared a negative reaction from parents, and nearly half felt alienated or estranged from at least one family member. Overall, LGBTQ youth identified parental/family rejection as the most difficult challenge in their lives.
