Relationships are continually made and remade through communication.

As we change, we may need something different from our relationships.

The strength of our relationships is one of the best predictors of long-term health.

Most of us speak of relationships as things we have. We tend to think of a marriage or a close friendship as something that simply stays the way it is. Relationships, however, are always in the making. We remake them again and again through the ways we communicate with one another, often without realizing we are doing it.

The phrase “speaking of relationships” carries two meanings for me (and is why I chose it as the name of this blog!). The first is simple: this is a place for talking about all things relational, from the families we are born into to the ones we choose, and yes, even that ex. The second comes from years of studying how people communicate to make sense of their lives and relationships.

We often think of communication as sending and receiving messages, as though our relationships exist somewhere apart from the things we say to one another. Scholars have........
