CHEERS AND JEERS: Cheers to P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz for calling a quick byelection
Cheers to Premier Rob Lantz for calling a byelection in Cornwall-Meadowbank earlier than he is required to. The seat has been vacant after former health minister Mark McLane died in March, leaving area residents without representation in the legislature since before his death. It’s understandable why the call wouldn’t be made immediately. No party wants to be seen as trying to capitalize on the death of a respected and well-regarded politician. Still, a byelection has to be called within six months of a seat becoming vacant, and that’s a long time for residents to go without an MLA. This byelection will be Liberal Leader Robert Mitchell’s second chance to get a seat in the legislature and while there is no guarantee he will win, Lantz could have dragged it out to possibly keep his opponent on the outside looking in even longer. With less than a month to go before the results are in, Cornwall-Meadowbank residents will soon have the same level of representation as all Islanders.
