Canada is under threat. It has come on us like a tornado, catching us unaware and vulnerable.

How could those dimwit Americans elect a fascist-leaning president intent on making trouble everywhere, certainly here.

But looking carefully, it is clear we have for a long time been lazy, and too dependent on other societies. We have held on to a colonial mindset and taken for granted our immense natural resources. Many have had a quiet sense of confidence, but most have deeply envied the United States, not for a moment imagining that country would turn into a threat.

In response, an awakening is happening.

Prof. Timothy Snyder of Yale University is moving to the University of Toronto. He wrote an important book in 2016 analyzing MAGA forces which he called “On Tyranny.” That has an ominous ring.

It is not a difficult read. And Snyder is at pains to make it accessible to every level of reader. He contracted actor John Lithgow to narrate on YouTube........
