Four essential thinkers for today

It is a very troubling time. A rupture, as our Prime Minister says.

Great unease is present in all quarters, unpredictability rules. Bad, and very rich men all over the world seem to be setting the rules for behaviour. Who is there to lead confused masses of people?

In this column, I admit to lack of certainty, but at the same time, I offer the names and ideas of four thinkers who impress me with their moral depth and perceptiveness, and a style of speaking and writing that rings true.

They are two women and two men; two Canadians and two Americans, all using a substantial format by which to communicate their ideas — an essay, a newsletter, a book, or a Substack post — to make their point: Three are Katharine Hayhoe, Heather Cox Richardson, and Charlie Angus.

There is a fourth who immediately comes to mind, a broadcaster on CBC Newsworld, David Cochrane, whose learning and wit........
