The end of summer is almost upon us, and this time of year will find students and parents shopping for essential school supplies, such as a computer.

They probably won’t be the only people shopping for a new or replacement computer since the back-to-school sales will feature some of the best computer bargains of the year.    

However, after purchasing a device, a major project will be to install the programs to make the computer useful. In my last column I discussed the installation of an anti-virus utility and an office suite of tools for content creation such as documents and presentations. There are many other apps and programs available to meet anyone’s personal computing needs, and the big bonus is that many of the most useful are free.

The smartphone has been a revolution in many ways, but especially in the realm of high-quality photography. It’s also possible to edit photos with sophisticated built-in tools and for more editing features, there is the free mobile app Adobe Photoshop Express........
