Social harmony: Pakistan’s strategic imperative
SOCIAL harmony refers to the ability of individuals and communities to understand and respect one another’s ideas, beliefs, emotions, and actions while living together in an atmosphere of mutual acceptance, tolerance, empathy, and cooperation. It is the foundation of a stable society, built upon shared moral values, social cohesion, and economic interdependence. A harmonious society provides the basis for national integration — the process through which diverse communities, cultures, and social groups are united under a common national identity. National integration fosters a shared sense of belonging, solidarity, and collective purpose. In this process, diversity is transformed into strength.
Differences of religion, language, culture, ethnicity, tribe, caste, and region have traditionally been harmonized within the broader framework of Pakistani nationalism. Despite its diverse social fabric, Pakistan has largely maintained unity amidst diversity, with citizens from different backgrounds contributing to a cohesive and resilient society. However, this social cohesion faced significant challenges from the 1980s onwards. The Soviet-Afghan War turned Pakistan into a frontline state, leaving behind militancy, illegal weapons, narcotics, and unregulated financial networks. The subsequent global war against terrorism further deepened these challenges, imposing enormous social, economic, political, and security costs on Pakistan and weakening national integration.
