What will be the challenges of a three-goalie rotation?
The Edmonton Oilers will carry three goalies on the roster to start the season, barring an injury in training camp or preseason.
Stanley Cup champion Freddie Andersen turns 37 on Oct. 2, and he’s played 34, 16, 22 and 35 games the past four seasons. He’s built for a three-goalie rotation.
Tristan Jarry is 31 and looking for a bounce-back season. Rumours of him being injury-prone are overblown. From 2021 to 2025, he played the 10th most games in the NHL among goalies (and he had a stint in the AHL in that time), before battling multiple injuries last year. I don’t think one season makes him injury-prone.
Devon Levi turns 25 in December and spent last season in the American Hockey League. He has played 39 NHL games in his career and is looking for an opportunity to show he can play in the NHL.
It is a unique combination of goalies, and you can make a case they are a good mix for a three-goalie rotation, if there is such a thing. Most goalies don’t like it, and it makes sense why they don’t, but more teams have tried it recently, and the Oilers will experiment with it — at least to start the season. One injury, and suddenly you have a regular tandem, or if Levi struggles, he could be sent down. There are many options, and goalie coach Peter Aubry has the responsibility to work it the best he can while trying to keep all three goalies happy, fresh and ready.
To me, the biggest challenge for the goalies will be to find a rhythm. Freddie Andersen has played sparingly the past four seasons, often due to injury, but he knows how to stay sharp without playing too often. It is a mental challenge as much as it is a physical burden. I have very little concern Andersen will perform well in this scenario, but it is fair to wonder how Jarry and Levi will handle the three-headed monster.
I asked Kevin Woodley from In Goal Magazine what he sees as the biggest hurdle for Jarry and Levi succeeding in this situation:
“If you’re asking somebody to make big adjustments and you’re not giving them a chance to play a lot of games to get comfortable with........
