New Delhi: Riding the anti-corruption bandwagon, AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal has successfully seized power in Delhi in 2013. The anti-corruption ‘Crusader’ not only put a full stop to the 15 year old Congress rule in Delhi, but also inflicted a humiliating defeat on its chief minister of 15 years – Sheila Dikshit, from the New Delhi assembly constituency. But with a hung assembly as verdict in 2013, Kejriwal was compelled to take support of the ‘same Congress’ he accused of all that was bad in Delhi and its politics. Despite BJP emerging as the largest party with 32 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, AAP (28) joined hands with Congress (8) to muster a 36 member majority. This was the first sign that, above all the pretensions, Kejriwal was only a politician and he fully understands that compromises are part of politics. However, this surrender before Congress was weighing so heavily on his conscience that he resigned just 48 days after assuming office (Chief Minister) on the pretext that the Congress was thwarting him from introducing the Delhi Jan Lokpal Bill. The message — Kejriwal will not surrender when it comes to his principles. With his resignation, he achieved redemption from the sin of shaking Congress’s hand. Thereafter, Kejriwal demanded full majority from the people of Delhi to deliver on his promises. They obliged and the rest is history.
