Why is Poland in turmoil? Court dispute, protests and political tensions explained
Poland is facing renewed political tensions following reports of protests in Warsaw over the suspension of a senior Constitutional Tribunal judge, exposing deep divisions between Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government and the opposition.
Poland has been hit by a fresh political crisis after the reported suspension of Constitutional Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski triggered protests and clashes with police in Warsaw. On Friday, October 30, demonstrators gathered outside the court, with some attempting to break through security barriers. Police detained three people as tensions rose. Polish President Karol Nawrocki reportedly cut short his visit to Africa and returned home amid the unrest.
At the centre of the dispute is Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government and the opposition Law and Justice party, commonly known as PiS. Tusk’s administration has been trying to reverse controversial judicial changes introduced by the previous government. His opponents accuse him of interfering with the courts and undermining Poland’s constitutional system. The confrontation has raised concerns about another prolonged political standoff in the European Union member state.
Skandaliczne nagranie. Nie chcieli wpuścić prezydenta Nawrockiego do budynku, więc musiał się przez nich przepchnąć. Te obrazki zostaną z Tuskiem do końca życia. https://t.co/CmuWMNUmUI — chrzanik (@chrzanikx) October 31, 2026
