Scientists may have caught a dark matter signal deep underground, but one event is not enough

Researchers at the underground LUX-ZEPLIN experiment have detected a particle interaction that could match the expected behaviour of dark matter. Scientists say the single event is intriguing, but far more evidence is needed before any discovery can be claimed.

Scientists hunting for dark matter may have seen one of the most intriguing signals yet. During the LUX-ZEPLIN, or LZ, experiment in South Dakota, researchers detected a particle interaction that behaved in a way expected from a hypothetical dark matter particle known as a WIMP.

The experiment is located about 1.6 kilometres underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, inside a former gold mine. Researchers are being careful with the finding. Particle physicist Sam Eriksen of the University of Bristol said it “could be the first hint of a........
