NASA’s new Roman telescope can see 100 times wider than Hubble
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has begun its journey to a point around 1.6 million kilometres from Earth after launching aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. The telescope will map billions of galaxies, search for exoplanets and investigate dark matter and dark energy during its multi-year mission.
NASA has successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, sending its newest flagship observatory on a mission to study dark matter, dark energy, distant galaxies and planets beyond our Solar System. Roman lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 7:26 am EDT on August 30 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
The telescope is now travelling towards the Sun-Earth L2 point, around 1.6 million kilometres from Earth. The trip is expected to take roughly three months. Once operational, Roman will spend at least five years surveying huge areas of space, with NASA aiming for a possible 10-year mission.
