US death row inmate Christa Pike has regained consciousness and is speaking after surviving a botched lethal injection in Tennessee. She was administered two doses of pentobarbital during the September 30 execution but did not die.

New Delhi: US death row inmate Christa Pike has regained consciousness and is speaking days after surviving a failed lethal injection in Tennessee, in a case that has raised questions over how the execution drugs were administered.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed on September 30 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. She was administered two doses of pentobarbital, the drug used by Tennessee for lethal injections. However, the execution was stopped after Pike remained alive.

She was subsequently taken to hospital and placed on a ventilator. Her lawyers said she has now regained consciousness and is able to speak, although she remains under intensive........
