Opinion | Why BJP Government’s Uniform Enforcement Of Laws In Bengal Irks The Left And TMC
All this points to a dystopian “normal” wherein infringements by people with powerful political links had gone on for so long that they now take it as their inalienable right
West Bengal’s governments and ruling parties had become so used to flouting or ignoring laws, rules and regulations that the enforcement of existing ones by the new BJP dispensation and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari have been met with predictable outrage by the Left and TMC. They are now busy orchestrating “resistance" to these “impositions" by the BJP government, pretending these are new and/or devised to further a communal agenda in West Bengal.
First came the order by the new government to enforce helmet-wearing by all those riding two-wheelers. It has been denounced as targeting a particular community instead of as a universal traffic safety measure, as no one is exempt from it except turban-wearing Sikhs. That is because so far the law had been enforced selectively too – in effect exempting bikers from the same community now posited as the sole focus of this enforcement drive. How was that a fair practice?
