A new poll finds that support for Israel among Canadians has dropped significantly since Hamas’s October 7 massacre sparked the war in Gaza, but it comes with a silver lining: despite a hostile media, academia and a vocal minority constantly disparaging Zionism, support for the Jewish people’s right to a homeland and Israel’s right to defend itself remains high.

The survey, which was conducted by Leger on behalf of Postmedia, sampled 1,618 Canadians over the age of 18 from March 27-30. It found that, “Canadians hold generally unfavourable views of Israel,” with only 22 per cent viewing the Jewish state favourably, down from 33 per cent in April 2023.

For context, Canadians have a more favourable view of Communist China (33 per cent) and Cuba (54 per cent), but there is far less support for Russia and Iran (12 per cent). The United States also has a 22 per cent favourability rating.
