Virtual autism is a term used to describe autism like behaviors in children that may result from excessive exposure to screen based devices like smart phones, tablets, laptops, computers, television etc. The concept highlights the concerns about potential impact of screen time on social, emotional and cognitive development of child.

The term virtual autism was first introduced by Dr. Marius Zamfir, a Romanian psychologist in early 2010. He observed children displaying symptoms similar to autism such as delayed speech, poor eye contact, repetitive behaviors, and social withdrawal. After reducing screen time and incorporating interactive therapies, many of these children showed significant improvement, suggesting a link between excessive screen use and development challenges.
