A Common Commission

Historically the first pay commission was established in1/1946 under the Chairmanship of Shri Srinivasa Varadacharia who submitted report in 5/1947. The main aim was to review the pay structure of about 15 lakh central government employees in the post independence period. Its recommendations led to fixation of minimum salary of Rs.55/ per month and a maximum of Rs.2,000/ per month. For judiciary the first National Judicial Pay Commission was created in 1996 under the Chairmanship of Shri Jagannathan Shetty to review the pay structure of subordinate judiciary officers. This was pursuant to Hon’ble Supreme Court direction during 1993 to delink salaries of judiciary officers from those of executive side. The Commission submitted its report in 1999 with recommendations to be implemented in stages by the State Governments. The Commission recommended a minimum of Rs.9,000/ per month for the entry level........
