Have you ever heard the phrase “If you can remember the ’60s, then you weren’t really there?”

Comedian Charles Fleischer is credited for coming up with that line, which was published in a Los Angeles Times column in 1982. Apparently, the 8,000 folks that eagerly showed up for the John Fogerty and Steve Winwood double bill at Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center Sept. 5 might not have remembered — if not at all. Most in attendance at one of the most anticipated concerts of the summer were definitely in their teens or older in the ’60s, and they knew the words of the songs, too.

Steve Winwood, a founding member of three significant ’60s bands — The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith — very casually strolled on stage, sat quietly at a piano, and opened his set with a spirited version of “Glad,” the instrumental opener from Traffic’s 1970 album John Barleycorn Must Die, followed by a switch to guitar for the Blind Faith gem “Can’t Find My Way Home.” With barely a pause in between, he jumped on his Hammond B-3 organ to sing Timmy Thomas’ ’70s hit “Why Can’t We Live Together,” which led right into “I’m a Man,” the 1967 Spencer Davis classic he co-wrote.
