FAITH PERSPECTIVES: Different kinds of prayers
I couldn’t resist and so I sang a Janis Joplin song at the beginning of a sermon. “Oh Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz. My friends all drive Porsches I must make amends. Worked hard all my life, no help from my friends. So oh Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz.”
Silly I know but think about all the things we ask God for.
So, what are the different kind of prayers? There is adoration when we are praising God. There is confession … you know confession is good for the soul. Supplication is prayer for ourselves. Thanksgiving from the Greek word Eucharist. Centering or Contemplative prayer when we get quiet and try to push aside distractions. At church we are doing corporate prayer. And soon we will have prayers of the people.
When I was working on my family history I went to Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn. Many headstones read “My Jesus Mercy.” Recently I was at a food truck and chatting with one........
