From AI Ambition To Global Influence: Bangladesh’s Emerging Technology Diplomacy – OpEd

Bangladesh ranks mid-to-lower tier in global innovation and AI readiness (GII 2025: 106th; Government AI Readiness: 75th), with stronger public-sector adoption than in infrastructure, research capacity, talent, and private-sector innovation.

The country faces a strategic choice between the China-led WAICO and the US-led Pax Silica, each offering different paths for technology cooperation, investment, and influence in global AI governance.

AI could boost RMG competitiveness, logistics, defence, and domestic innovation, but progress depends on addressing skill shortages, infrastructure gaps, data privacy, cybersecurity, and ethical governance while preserving strategic autonomy.

You physically stay at home but feel like you are doing the same things at the office or keeping surveillance over both the office and home; despite staying in one place, this is made only possible by the blessing of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Actually, This world is truly fascinated by Artificial Intelligence, undoubtedly. Geographical strategic advantage, Military development, and even economic dynamics are quietly influenced through the advancement of AI. Likewise, all companies, corporations and even countries are engaged with it deliberately. 

According to the WIPO Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025, Bangladesh ranks 106th out of 139 economies, placing it 8th among 10 economies in Central and Southern Asia; its innovation-input rank is 115th, while its innovation-output rank is 95th, indicating that the country still faces a significant gap in research, infrastructure and institutional capacity despite producing relatively better innovation outputs. In the Oxford Insights Government AI Readiness Index 2025, Bangladesh ranks 75th out of 195 countries, with particularly strong performance in Public Sector Adoption (82.78/100) and Policy Capacity (69/100), but much weaker scores in AI Infrastructure (39.02), Development & Diffusion (26.97) and Resilience (29.64).
