The Richest Countries: Not Ideology But Actions – OpEd

As I have pointed out more than once, econometrics has no scientific value. To begin with, everyone performs these statistics and mathematical calculations, such as GDP, according to their criteria. So, at best, they can draw a trend for journalistic purposes.

Having clarified that, what the global reality shows is that ideologies, political speeches are only electoral propaganda, what counts are the facts. Academia, intellectual activity, when it is true science, can influence any politician or society whatever its electoral harangue.

Gabriel Cohen published an interesting article titled “The World’s Largest Economies in 2026: Nominal vs. PPP.” Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) means comparing how much can be purchased with the same amount of money. That is, two people in different countries can nominally earn the same amount, but one gets more goods since prices are lower there, and then he would be richer. 

The following graph compares countries by counting, on the one hand, nominal GDP, which measures output at current exchange rates, and on the other by considering PPP, based on local prices and cost of living. The data is projected for 2026.

China ranks first as the world’s largest economy by PPP, given that prices are lower there, while the U.S. remains first by nominal GDP, which is the standard measure used........
