It is a profound shame that Premier Danielle Smith pours all her energy into breaking Alberta away from Canada, while leaving thousands of Albertans with disabilities to face a dark and difficult road in the coming months.

I know, I know. We’ve written far too much on the impending implementation of the Alberta Disabled Assistance Program: a significant shift which will divide the disability safety net.

Since 1979 the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped program served as a singular bedrock. Now, the government is drawing a firm, bureaucratic line.

One path for those permanently unable to work. Another for those deemed to possess partial capacity.

It is downright scary and could create lineups to provincial food banks of hungry people with disabilities who simply can’t afford to buy food.
