CBC as Canada’s federally appointed fact-checker? That sounds less like journalism and more like turning the state broadcaster into an information gatekeeper for the governing party.

There’s been a lot of excitement after Blacklock’s Reporter published a story this week headlined “CBC To Be Fed Fact Checker.”

The report cited an April 13 memo titled Reinforcing CBC that stated, “The government is exploring options to modernize CBC’s mandate,” including making “combating misinformation” part of CBC’s responsibilities.

The idea is laughable for many reasons, but it shouldn’t be surprising. The Liberals proposed exactly this in their 2025 election platform.

“Fully equipping them to combat disinformation so that Canadians have a news source they know and trust,” reads part of the section of the Liberal platform devoted to CBC.
