Take Edmonton’s Hope Mission, which has operated with a certain level of notoriety in recent years from both clients and surrounding communities. Indeed, it’s not exactly a selling point when Justin Bone, the man on trial for a pair of brutal 2022 murders in Chinatown, told court that he refused to stay at the area’s Hope Mission shelter in the days before the killings because he saw it as dirty and unsafe.

Of course, the counterpoint to that is to ask a simple question we probably don’t ask enough: What would happen to the city and its substantial homeless population if the organization suddenly closed down?
