Christmas turkey farmers call for action after bird flu outbreak

Government vets ordered a mass cull after highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed in the large commercial poultry premises.

The region's producers were devastated three years ago when they found themselves at the epicentre of a major outbreak - leading to thousands of birds being culled.

Since then, farmers have been on constant alert - fearing it could return.

In August this year there was a false alarm after highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was suspected in a flock near Woodbridge.

The flock was later found to be clear of the disease but by then had been pre-emptively culled.

Despite six cases in other parts of the country during the latest disease season - which runs from October to September each year - the region's kept birds remained clear.
