Tragic death of mother who drowned on seafront must not be in vain, coroner says

Saffron Cole-Nottage, 32, was walking her dog on the evening of February 2, 2025 with one of her children, when she slipped and fell headfirst from the concrete path onto boulders below.

She became wedged between two rocks on a closed section of the seafront in Lowestoft, and although bystanders tried to free her, they were unsuccessful.

An inquest held at Suffolk Coroners Court in Ipswich ended on May 15 with a narrative conclusion after the emergency response had been examined.

In the wake of Ms Cole-Nottage’s death, the Area Coroner for Suffolk, Darren Stewart, sent damning reports to the chief executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST), the head of NHS England and the Chief Constable JESIP National Police Strategic Lead and Senior Responsible Officer.

This Prevention of Future Deaths (PFD) report raised serious concerns over the management of the emergency response to Ms Cole-Nottage’s death.
