Norwich prisoner who feared poisoning did not die by suicide, jury finds

HMP Norwich inmate Hallam Elgood, 38, was found hanging in his cell but jurors at Norfolk Coroner’s Court returned a narrative conclusion, finding there was not enough evidence to prove he intended to take his own life.

The inquest, heard by area coroner Yvonne Blake, had previously been told Elgood’s mental health had deteriorated in the days before his death, with him claiming his food and vape cartridges had been poisoned and that a “hitman” was trying to kill him.

A key piece of evidence considered by the jury was an unsent letter found in his cell after his death, which his family said was not a suicide note and instead suggested he was making plans for the future.

In the handwritten note, Elgood asked his partner to send him £20 and bring his trainers when she next visited, writing: “Are you coming to visit me this time or not?” and asking whether he should fill out a visitor form.

He also expressed confusion and distress about his mental state, writing: “Don’t know what the **** is going on in my head anymore… I think I am losing the plot,” and “Don’t know what to say or do,........
