Coventry pool faces demolition debate as some say 'well past their use by date'
Plans to demolish the Grade II listed swimming pool attached to Coventry ’s Elephant leisure centre have divided opinion among Coventry Live readers. A decision on the building’s future could be made by the end of the year. The pool, which has been closed since 2020, is currently costing around £400,000 a year to maintain.
Hopes remain that the Elephant itself — the distinctive structure straddling Cox Street — could be saved, with talks ongoing between Coventry City Council and developers. Cllr Jim O’Boyle, cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change, responded after a petition urging the council to modernise and reopen the Elephant gained 725 signatures.
