Brookman: Unbridled optimism over Canada's economic potential tempered by a word of caution

Is Canada in a moment of unrealistic fantasy and false optimism, or on the brink of the biggest economic boom we have ever seen?

Over the past few weeks it has been a privilege to attend three different forums and listen to more than 14 experts, both women and men, talk about the position Canada is in at this moment. The speakers have ranged from energy leaders, health-care executives, economists and politicians, including a U.S. state governor.

Almost without exception, the commentary included lists of the benefits and assets that Canadians enjoy. The prime minister received a steady flow of non-partisan compliments and kudos. However, all of this positive energy was tempered by a consistent message: “You have to get your act together and seize the moment.”

Canada can provide the world with food, energy and talent, but only if we create an environment that encourages investment and certainty. Millions of dollars in trade cannot be brought to a halt because of a labour dispute in the Port of Vancouver, or by protesters with some minor axe to grind.
