Another key tariff-related deadline is approaching for Alberta companies, and business leaders such as John Jeffrey and Corey Smith are taking note.

Unless a Canada-United States trade deal is reached within the next few days, Canadian counter-tariffs are expected to kick in, beginning Tuesday.

And while Alberta exports have largely escaped the direct brunt of U.S.-imposed tariffs on Canadian products, some businesses are being squeezed by the White House’s trade action. Others will soon see counter-tariffs placed on goods they acquire from American suppliers.

Saturn Oil & Gas CEO Jeffrey told the Financial Post that the Calgary-based company expects Canadian tariffs on U.S. steel products used in the oil and gas sector for well casing and tubing to affect the business, once existing inventory is used during ongoing exploration and production work.

In an interview Wednesday, Jeffrey told the Herald that incoming Canadian retaliatory tariffs could increase the producer’s well expenses by about three to five per cent, amounting to an estimated $5-million to $15-million cost annually.

“Internally we’re budgeting at about a five per cent impact. I know these tariffs are higher but there are some replacements out there, and there are some workarounds . . . so (it’s) material, but not crippling,” he said.
