Vance leads expanding federal crackdown on fraud and waste

The administration of President Donald Trump has launched an aggressive nationwide campaign aimed at rooting out fraud across multiple federal programs, with Vice President J.D. Vance taking a leading role in coordinating the effort. Through the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, federal agencies are working together to identify fraudulent activity, recover taxpayer funds, strengthen oversight mechanisms, and prosecute those accused of exploiting government assistance programs.

Officials describe the initiative as one of the most comprehensive anti-fraud efforts undertaken in recent years. According to the administration, investigations conducted during the first months of the task force’s operation have uncovered billions of dollars in questionable payments, led to numerous criminal investigations, and resulted in significant reforms across several federal agencies.

The task force was established with a mandate to identify weaknesses in government programs that allow fraud to flourish. Rather than focusing on a single department, the initiative brings together agencies responsible for healthcare, education, agriculture, contracting, law enforcement, and financial oversight. The administration argues that fraud has become deeply embedded in multiple government systems, costing taxpayers billions of dollars annually and diverting resources away from legitimate beneficiaries.

One of the task force’s earliest and most prominent actions involved Medicaid oversight. Federal investigators identified concerns regarding spending and oversight practices in Minnesota, prompting officials from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to pause more than $250 million in Medicaid funding while investigations continue. Administration officials stated that the review was necessary to verify whether billed services had actually been delivered and whether payments complied with federal requirements.

Vice President Vance has repeatedly emphasized what he describes as a fundamental problem in certain government programs: payments being approved without adequate verification. According to administration officials, fraudsters have exploited bureaucratic weaknesses by submitting claims for services that were never provided or by using false documentation to secure government funds.
